Welcome from Associate Professor Martin Power, Head of the Department of Sociology.

Welcome to the Department of Sociology at the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, Ireland. We are located within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Sociology is one of the foundational social sciences with a specific focus on core social dynamics and provides explanations for behaviour and experience in relation to social contexts of everyday life.

Sociology is a central element of the both the BA Arts and the BSc in Social Sciences programmes. It is also offered as part of the BA in Psychology and Sociology and other undergraduate programmes. UL Sociology also offers taught Masters programmes including the MA in Sociology (Youth, Community, and Social Regeneration) and the MSc in Sociology and Data Analytics, and a PhD (by research) programme.

The Department has a strong research ethos and an impressive overall output. Our faculty publish in international and national outlets, are internationally networked and secure international and national research funding. Faculty members engage with local, national, and supranational bodies and/or act in advisory capacities for, national and international committees, activities which have a direct impact on policy formation both locally and internationally. Interdisciplinary Research Centres linked to our Department include the Centre for the Study of Popular Music and Popular Culture (CSPMPC) and the European Centre for the Study of Hate (ECSH).

Members of the Department of Sociology have won awards for teaching excellence, and we are committed to improving the educational experience of our students. We continue to develop innovative and relevant, quality curriculum and assessment for inclusion, engagement, and progression and we promote and exemplify effective pedagogies to support our students as engaged and active learners. The values of methodological rigor, social relevance, internationalisation, and a commitment to social justice underpin the Department’s approach to developing students as knowledgeable members of the sociological community and as critical and engaged global citizens.
