Old English Reading Groups Poster
Friday, 13 February 2026

Hosted every Friday from 1.00pm to 3.00pm in SLB-005, these reading groups have been founded to cultivate a community of Old English studies for students, early career researchers and academics alike. They are intended to shine a light on literature from medieval England to showcase the beautiful poetry and epics that can be found within this period of history.

While poems such as "Beowulf" and "The Wanderer" have been well received and adopted in the modern era, especially with the case of J.R.R. Tolkien, there are other stories that highlight the Old English mindset and their beliefs.

The reading groups will follow a weekly format and will offer an in depth discussion into the language, themes and significance of the literature. These reading groups are open to anyone with an interest in the era and are age friendly.

The groups, meeting only from weeks 3 to 10, are organised by EIC PhD Candidate Aaron Keane, whose research focuses on Old English and Latin Textual Transmission. Aaron is supervised by Dr. Carrie Griffin of UL and Professor Tom Birkett of UCC.
