On Wednesday 11 February, Dr Eddie Keane (School of Law) hosted a seminar, led by Professor Renan Le Mestre, Nantes Université, France. Professor Le Mestre is a leading academic in the areas of International Law, Comparative Constitutional Law, and in particular US Constitutional Law. In the seminar, Dr Le Mestre discussed the historical sweeping expansion of presidential power in the US, explaining what the Founding Fathers of America had in mind when they drafted the original set of powers, how the original balance was modified in favour of the President from 1932 onwards and how the current Administration have used those powers, especially regarding deportations, freeze of federal funds, and economic emergency powers. The well-attended seminar concluded by discussing the possibility to roll back that presidential imperial primacy.
