A study on the fulfilment of election pledges by the last Irish government (2020-2024) by Rory Costello and Se谩n 脫 Maoilriain, was published as a chapter in the book 'How Ireland Voted 2024'. The chapter, entitled 鈥楾he Record of the Outgoing Government: Pledge Fulfilment in a Time of Plenty', analysed over 800 election pledges contained in the manifestos of the outgoing government parties and examined what actions were taken on each pledge. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that the Green Party did not exert an outsized influence on government policy; rather, the number of pledges delivered by each party was roughly proportionate to its size. The study also found that favourable economic conditions and a large budget surplus enabled the government to fulfil a much higher number of pledges than previous governments, and avoid the compromises normally associated with coalition government. The research was supported by fieldwork funding from the AHSS Faculty Research Board.
