Workshop
Monday, 15 December 2025

On 17th November, the Ralahine Centre for Utopian Studies hosted a multidisciplinary workshop in which scholars discussed what a political economy shaped by utopian principles might resemble. The workshop was organised by Dr Patrick Doyle (PPA) as part of COOPNET, an Irish Research Council New Foundations award. The event featured a keynote from Dr Jerome Warren (University of Eastern Finland) who discussed the utopian implications of work carried out by the co-operative movement through a range of case-studies drawn from the forthcoming edited collection 'Global Cooperative Economics & Movements'. A range scholars from Politics, Literature, Architecture, History, Literature, and from the co-operative and charity sector presented short interventions to discuss the practical utopian possibilities contained in their own work. Everybody left the Kate O'Brien room excited by the utopian possibilities that exist today - an important resource of hope in a world marred by climate chaos, inequality, and genocide. The Ralahine Centre for Utopian Studies will be looking to host more events in the near future, so if you are interested in shaping these outputs please do contact one of the Centre members whose details can be found here: /artsoc/ralahinecentre
