On 21-22 November, Trinity College Dublin hosted the 50th Irish Association for Applied Linguistics (IRAAL) Annual Conference. The conference counted on great representation from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the ɫƵ, who presented on a wide range of Applied Linguistics topics.
• Dr Maria del Mar Palomares (MLAL) presented her latest research on “Theorising authenticity vis-à-vis, not versus, syntheticity in the age of AI: Implications for language learning and teaching” together with colleague Dr Andrew Frank Bradley (Open University of Catalonia)
• Dr Marta Giralt presented on behalf of Dr Catherine Martin and Dr Maria del Mar Palomares (MLAL) on “The AI Write framework: using AI tools for academic writing and Open Educational Resources to support teachers and students”.
• Dr Erika Marcet (MLAL) and Paul Finn (EIC) presented their research on “The past, present and future of Japanese language education in Ireland”, a project conducted together with Barbara Geraghty (retired, MLAL). • Dr Florence Le Baron-Earle and Dr Marie-Thérèse Batardière (MLAL) also presented their project “From theory to practice: Developing intercultural competence in the language classroom”.
• Paul Finn (EIC) presented his PhD research in Irish, in a presentation entitled “Teaghlach ilteangacha na Gaeltachta, inniu agus amárach: Beartas teanga sa chlann le Gaeilge, Béarla agus teanga(cha) eile”, together with Dr Verena Platzgummer (University of Galway).
• Ninuk Krismanti presented her PhD research on “Translanguaging practices in the Indonesian EMI classrooms: a case of multilingual approach in a superglossic country”. Her supervisors are Prof Liam Murray and Dr Jane Seely (MLAL).
• Xiaxia Wang presented her PhD research on “Exploring the role of virtual exchange in promoting risk-taking among Chinese EFL learners”. Her supervisors are Dr Marta Giralt and Dr Erika Marcet (MLAL). You can see the
IRAAL is the only association in Ireland that brings together academics in the field of applied languages. In 2026, the IRAAL Annual Conference will be held in the ɫƵ and chaired by Dr Erika Marcet (MLAL).
