Note: These instructions are for Local Guest Accounts only.

From the 27th of June we will be enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on Local Guest Accounts on Brightspace to enhance account security.  MFA will add an extra layer of security to your guest account, and we encourage all local guest account holders to enable this feature on their account as soon as possible.

What does this mean for me going forward?

If you login to Brightspace with a UL account there will be no change, and you can continue as usual.

If you login to Brightspace with a Local Guest Account, i.e. personal or external email address, then, from the 27th of June, on your next login you will be prompted to set-up MFA on your account.

Once setup, every time you subsequently login using your local guest account you will be prompted to enter a security code to verify your account

Enabling Multi-Factor Authentication

Before enabling Multi-Factor Authentication on Brightspace, you will need to have an Authenticator application on your mobile device. Some example apps include Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and Duo Mobile

Step 1. Login to Brightspace using your Local Guest Account Login.

Step 2. Follow the instructions on the page to register your account in your authenticator application. Instructions may differ between applications, such as the Microsoft Authentication App:

Depending on which authenticator you selected, follow the instruction to register your account.

We encourage all users to setup MFA on their accounts as soon as possible.  However, for user convenience, it will be temporarily possible to skip the MFA setup process until September 2025, when setting up MFA will become obligatory. At this stage a strict limit will be placed on the number of skips allowed to ensure MFA is setup and all user accounts are secured going forward.
