The UNESCO Chair in Physical Education and Sports Pedagogy for Sustainable Development is an international effort that seeks to establish a sustainable and inclusive approach to physical education and sport. By collaborating with global partners, the Chair will facilitate research, capacity building, and educational practices that contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Professor Ann MacPhail (¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, Ireland) is Chair of the UNESCO Chair and Professor Marco Rieckmann (University of Vechta, Germany) is Co-Chair.
The objectives of the project are to;
(1) educate physical education and sport pedagogy stakeholders in sustainable development and provide an advocacy skillset by which they can promote future-oriented sustainable development across multiple and diverse societies,
(2) develop and disseminate an innovative research agenda/portfolio that captures the pressing issues and potential synergies between physical education, sport pedagogy and sustainable development, with a view to directing stakeholders in meaningful research endeavours in the area, and
(3) establish an international and sustainable network across academia, civil society, local communities, practitioners and policymakers that builds stakeholder capacity in physical education and sport pedagogy for sustainable development.
Related activities and outputs of the UNESCO Chair include the appointment of adjunct positions, the appointment of a Research Master’s student scholarship, extension of a social justice research programme, a biannual lecture series on physical education and sport pedagogy for sustainable development, promotion of sustainable development as a cornerstone of teaching in teacher education programmes, a position paper on physical education and sport pedagogy for sustainable development, student and staff exchange and biennial conference in cooperation with UNESCO.
