Brief Description
Enhance your skills and knowledge in perioperative nursing care to progress to specialist and advanced roles.
±«³¢â€™s two-year Master of Science in Nursing (Perioperative Care) helps you to develop and enhance specialist level knowledge and skills in perioperative nursing care.
Designed for working nurses, the programme offers a blended and flexible learning approach with on-campus and workplace learning.
The programme emphasises cross-discipline collaboration to ensure safe, effective and patient-centred care, preparing you to contribute to integrated care delivery.
On successful completion of Year 1 of programme, students can exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Perioperative Care)
During this programme, you will:
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of contemporary nursing skills in the assessment and management of patients in a perioperative environment.
- Examine best practice in meeting the perioperative care needs of the surgical patient.
- Explore the value of multidisciplinary collaboration in the provision of safe and quality evidenced based perioperative care.
- Review current innovations and developments in leading and managing change in perioperative care practice.
Key information:
- Complete full-time over two years. Taken on a part-time basis
- Blended delivery – on campus and online
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters. You can click here for a schedule of lectures.
- Undertake six modules in Year 1, including two specialist modules in perioperative care and two clinical practicum modules.
As part of the clinical practicum modules, complete 500 hours of clinical practice across both semesters.
- Option to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Perioperative Care) after Year 1
- Students who achieve a minimum QCA grade of 2.00 at the end of year one may progress to the second year for the MSc award.
Complete a systematic/integrated review, at the end of the final semester
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credential

- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
Year 1
Autumn Semester
- Health Research – Methods & Methodology (M)(NS6036) enables students to develop an understanding of the social, political, ethical and personal context of the research process.
- Theoretical Principles of Perioperative Nursing (M)(NS6091) develops knowledge and expertise on the principles underpinning perioperative nursing at specialist/advanced practice levels.
- facilitates the consolidation, integration, and application of theory within practice.
Spring Semester
- explores the concept of quality and safety in healthcare in promoting quality patient outcomes.
- ) develops knowledge and expertise in the provision, management and co-ordination of perioperative nursing at specialist/advanced practice levels.

Year 2
Autumn Semester
- facilitates students to conduct work on a systematic/integrated review.
Spring Semester
- facilitates students to organise, prepare and present final research dissertation.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a discipline
- Be a registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Be engaged in practice as a registered nurse for at least one year.
- Students are expected to work in a peri-operative practice setting throughout the programme.
- Successful applicants must have Garda clearance, health screening, CPR certification and vaccinations before placement (any costs will be covered by the student). More information on student vetting.

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
