Brief Description

 Respiratory assessment is a critical nursing skill and essential to identifying the needs and priorities of people with breathing difficulties.  

This 12-week, Level 9 micro-credential is designed for registered nurses who want to strengthen their clinical judgement, assessment techniques and respiratory care expertise. 

³Û´Ç³Ü’l±ô build a deeper understanding of respiratory anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and learn how to carry out focused assessments using advanced tools and diagnostic indicators.   

³Û´Ç³Ü’l±ô explore topics including ABG interpretation, oxygen assessment, chest auscultation, and managing the acutely unwell respiratory patient.  

³Û´Ç³Ü’l±ô also reflect on the role of the wider multidisciplinary team including physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and advanced nurse practitioners in delivering high-quality respiratory care.  

Whether you work in respiratory, acute or community settings, this module will help you build confidence in assessing, prioritising and responding to complex respiratory needs.  

This module is associated with the Nursing - MSc and Nursing (Respiratory Care) - MSc. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award. 

 

During this module, you will: 

  • Strengthen your ability to assess complex respiratory conditions and prioritise appropriate nursing interventions 

  • Apply advanced knowledge of respiratory pathophysiology to support safe and effective patient care 

  • Explore the relationship between physical and psychosocial needs in people with altered respiratory function 

  • Learn how to use clinical evidence and advanced assessment tools to support diagnostic decision-making 

Key Information 

This micro-credential will be delivered in a blended format over 12 weeks. 

You will be assessed using continuous assessment, including an in-person practical exam and written assignment, with no final exam.

  • Timetable provided after registration

To help you to be successful on this course:  

  • You must be a registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
