Brief Description
What role does economics play in shaping the biggest challenges of our time? This micro-credential explores contemporary issues through the lens of applied economics, from inequality and sustainability to fiscal policy and global development.
Designed for professionals with a non-economics background, this 12-week, Level 9 module equips you to critically assess public policy, interpret economic data, and evaluate real-world interventions. It also provides a pathway for learners looking to progress to postgraduate study in economics.
This module is associated with the Economics and Public Policy - Postgraduate Diploma. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module, you will:
Develop a deep understanding of our world, though the lenses of applied economics by exploring the rationale for public policy interventions using real-world economic examples.
Learn how to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of policy decisions from both micro- and macroeconomic perspectives.
Understand the key issues involved in making informed evidence-based policy decisions, based on rigorous economic analysis.
Build the skills to evaluate policy impacts and apply economic reasoning in professional roles or postgraduate study in economics.

This micro-credential will be delivered online over 12 weeks.
You will be assessed through continuous skill-based assignments, recorded presentations, contributions to debates and essays.
This micro-credential is complementary to the Applied Economics and Public Policy Issues micro-credential.

To help you to be successful on this course:
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in any discipline.
