Brief Description
Solving real-world environmental challenges relies on accurate geospatial data analysis. From Earth monitoring satellites to environmental sensors, IoT devices, and smartphones, advances in technology provide unprecedented opportunities for informed decision-making.
This 6-week micro-credential educates you in the use of open-source and commercial Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to analyse environmental and geospatial data.
If you are a professional working in geography, environmental science, sociology, mathematics, computer science, or a related field, this micro-credential is a valuable addition to your skill set.
You’ll gain hands-on experience working with geospatial datasets, generating meaningful insights, and applying cutting-edge mapping tools to environmental and sustainability challenges.
This module is associated with the Climate Adaptation and Sustainability - Professional Diploma programme. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module, you will:
Learn how to work with different types of geospatial data, including vector (point, line, polygon), raster, and attribute data.
Find out how to import and manipulate primary and secondary datasets using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
Master spatial analysis techniques, including coordinate reference systems, geometric processing, and geoprocessing tools.
Discover how to illustrate geospatial data effectively through maps and animated visualisations.
Key Information:
Delivered over six weeks through a combination of online learning and practical applications.
Assessment will be based on a project creating a map illustrating analysed environmental data.
Part-time considerations:
Designed for working professionals
Evening or recorded lectures
Additional prep and group work time
Timetable provided after registration
To help you to be successful on this course:
Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8), with at least a grade 2 (2:2) in Geography, Environmental Science, Sociology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered.
Guidelines for your application:
When applying, be sure to include the Module Code GY5021. We can’t process your application without it. You can apply for more than one module using the same application.
By applying, you confirm that you meet the entry requirements and can take part in the course and its assessments.
This course will go ahead if it meets minimum enrolment number.
Completing this module doesn’t guarantee you a place in a full programme. If you want to apply for a full programme, you must meet the specific entry requirements for that programme.
