Brief Description
Are you a research or clinical professional seeking additional knowledge, competencies and skills to elevate your practice?
UL’s programme in participatory health research aims to enhance your existing research capabilities by involving patients, carers and other members of the public in your research.
The one-year, part-time Professional Diploma equips you with the competencies and skills to employ participatory processes and undertake high quality participatory health research (PHR).
Learn how to actively engage with patients, carers, health care professionals, charities, community organisations and other members of the public through all stages of the research process to create action and change that benefits the wider community.
During this programme, you will:
- Gain an introduction to participatory health research as it applies to public and patient involvement in research.
- Explore participatory health research concepts and the theories and evidence that support them.
- Design a participatory project, building partnerships with community and PPI contributors and codesigning research in a meaningful collaboration.
- Explore the principles and practice of public and patient involvement research and practice key skills and tools with experts in the field.
Key information:
- Complete part-time over one year
- Designed for working professionals
- Blended delivery – weekly online and lectures one in-person training block in on-campus per semester
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters
- Face-to-face lectures will be held over two days during the autumn semester on Thursday and Friday in Week 7
- In the spring/summer semesters, face-to-face sessions will take place over four days—Tuesday to Friday—including two days focused on research methods and two for the Summer School
- Submit research project at the end of the final semester
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credential 
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
- Timetable provided after registration
Year 1
Autumn Semester
- Introduction to participatory health research for public & patient involvement (M) (BM5053) provides a practical introduction to participatory health research as it applies to public and patient involvement in research.
- Methods in participatory health research I (M) (BM5055) provides an overview of some of the participatory methods available to academic/partner research teams for accomplishing these goals.
- serves as an interactive and collaborative co-learning and self-assessment space for students.
Spring Semester
- focuses on collaborative design, community needs assessment, data gathering and various methods of participatory analysis.
- provides an in-depth exploration of participatory health research concepts and the theories and evidence that support them.
- supports students in developing and conducting their participatory research project.
Summer Semester
- provides an overview of the principles and practice of public and patient involvement research, and an opportunity to practice key skills and tools with experts in the field.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant or appropriate subject.
- Garda Vetting may be required in cases where individual proposed practicum involves children or vulnerable communities.
- The university may shortlist and interview applicants.

- Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc. 
- *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying.

Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa.
