Brief Description
Dementia is a general term that describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities, which interfere with daily life. Dementia is not a normal part of aging, and its diagnosis involves comprehensive assessment. The condition has significant physical, psychological, and social impacts on individuals and their families.
This 12-week, Level 9 micro-credential is designed for registered nurses who want to deepen their understanding of dementia and improve how people living with dementia at every stage of the condition.
At the end of this module, students will be able to:
Critically evaluate the philosophy underpinning person-centred dementia care. Critically acknowledge the concept of personhood in the context of dementia care. Critically analyse policies and strategies that impact dementia care. Discuss the pathophysiology and the illness trajectory of dementia. Undertake comprehensive, holistic assessments. Critically understand the importance of family/carer relationships for the person with dementia.
Whether you're new to dementia care or building on existing experience, this micro-credential will help you strengthen your skills and deliver thoughtful, responsive support.
This module is associated with Nursing (Dementia Care) - MSc. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module, you will:
Learn how dementia progresses and how to support the person at every stage of the journey
Build confidence in using comprehensive, holistic assessments to understand the needs of people with dementia
Understand the national and international policies shaping dementia care and your role in applying them
Develop practical, person-centred skills to support safe care and strong relationships with families and carers
Key Information
This micro-credential will be delivered in a blended format over 12 weeks.
You will be assessed using continuous assessment with no final exam. An OSCE assessment must be completed.

- You must be a registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
