Brief Description
Achieve Black Belt level in Lean and acquire the expertise to deliver measurable improvements in your organisation with UL’s one-year, part-time Professional Diploma in Quality Management, Lean Systems.
The programme focuses on applying Lean and Quality Management tools to improve processes, reduce waste, and drive operational excellence.
Designed by UL and several leading Irish companies to meet the standards of a Black Belt in Lean, the programme offers a progression route to the MSc in Strategic Quality Management Lean Sigma Systems.
Flexible delivery tailored for working professionals, with a blend of online modules and in-company project work.
Suitable for those wishing to achieve a Black Belt with the ability to lead significant process change and individuals with career ambitions in quality assurance, operational excellence, process improvement, and Lean/Six Sigma project leadership.
This programme will earn 30 ECTS credits towards a Flexible Masters Pathway, allowing students to combine Postgraduate awards to achieve a Master’s over time.
During this programme, you will:
- Develop knowledge and skills in Lean systems.
- Produce a substantial in-company project, in the form of a management report, that will help your business achieve a measurable impact.
- Integrate tools and techniques in your workplace to deliver significant improvements for the organisation.
- Explore the concepts of leadership, change management and teams, building on your professional and personal experience.
Key information:
- Complete part-time over one year
- Delivered online
- Intakes in both Autumn (September) and Spring (January)
- Modules taught during autumn and spring or spring and summer semesters
Approx. 12 weeks per semester
- Can be used to complete 30 credits towards Master of Professional Practice (MPP) or Masters in Strategic Quality Management, Lean Sigma Systems or MSc Engineering Practice
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credential 
You will learn through a blend of:

Year 1
Semester 1
- Lean Thinking/Lean Tools 1 (M) (AU5041) explains the concepts behind Lean tools and examines the various elements involved in using them to support an organisation's Lean transformation.
- explores the concepts of leadership, change management and teams, building on professional and personal experiences.
Semester 2
- examines additional lean tools and tool deployment.
- /integrates the different aspects of the taught modules and applies the student’s knowledge to a business standard, industry focused Black Belt project.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant or appropriate subject.
- You should have at least 1-3 years of relevant industrial work experience.
- Applicants who don’t meet the minimum entry requirement may be offered a place in exceptional circumstances.
- Those applicants will be required to provide a portfolio of evidence of prior qualifications in quality management together with the application of learning or competence (e.g green/black belt project reports, reflective papers or journals).
- The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.

- Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc. 
- *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying.

Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa.
Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
