Brief Description
Mental health challenges in pregnancy and after birth are common, and compassionate, informed support can make a major difference.
This 12-week, Level 9 micro-credential helps nurses, midwives and health and social care professionals build the confidence to recognise and respond to perinatal mental health needs.
³Û´Ç³Ü’l±ô explore how perinatal mental health affects women, infants and families, and how trauma, birth experience and identity can shape a person’s recovery. ³Û´Ç³Ü’l±ô also learn to apply trauma-informed, family-centred approaches when supporting women during and after pregnancy.
Whether you work in maternity care, mental health or community services, this module will give you theoretical knowledge and practical tools to support safer, more inclusive care.
This module is associated with the Perinatal Mental Health - MSc. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module, you will:
Learn how to recognise and respond to mental health challenges during and after pregnancy
Explore the impact of trauma, social identity and stigma on perinatal mental health
Develop the skills to deliver trauma-informed care and to work effectively with individuals during the perinatal period.
Build theoretical knowledge to support recovery and early intervention in mental health, maternity and community settings

This micro-credential will be delivered in a blended format over 12 weeks.
You will be assessed using continuous assessment with no final exam.

You must hold a recognised health related professional qualification.
You must be a registered with a relevant professional statutory body, e.g., NIMBI, CORU, PHECC.
