Brief Description
Supporting people with dementia takes more than clinical knowledge; it takes empathy, creativity and the ability to respond to individual needs and aspirations.
This 12-week, Level 9 micro-credential is designed for registered nurses who want to use proven, therapeutic interventions to ensure optimal quality of life for people living with dementia.
As dementia progresses, all aspects of the person’s daily life are impacted. In this module, you will explore how to identify and respond to the person’s needs and aspirations using best evidence-based approaches to care. This module helps you to build the skills to support the person holistically.
At the end of this module, students will be able to: Critically discuss the holistic needs of the person with dementia. Critically analyse relevant theories, innovations and best practices relating to dementia. Students develop specialist skills to support people living with dementia and their families to understand the disease progression and associated care pathways. Students will be introduced to a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, strategies and interventions, such as reality orientation, validation, and reminiscence, which can be used to promote communication and understanding, optimal nutrition, sleep, and mobility. Students will be equipped with the skills to address behavioural and psychological aspects of dementia when supporting people with dementia in reducing distress. Students will be enabled to recognise the value of family and environment in the care of people with dementia and demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of supporting individuals with dementia in end of life. hether you work in hospital, residential, day care or home care, you’ll learn how to provide safe, thoughtful and person-centred care across all stages of dementia, including at the end of life.
This module is associated with Nursing (Dementia Care) - MSc and Nursing - MSc. It can be taken as a standalone University Certificate of Study (UCOS) module or as part of a pathway to a larger award.
During this module, you will:
Learn how to support physical, emotional and behavioural needs through evidence-based nursing interventions
Explore therapeutic approaches such as reminiscence, validation and reality orientation
Understand the value of family, environment and meaningful activity in dementia care
Build confidence to care for people with dementia at all stages, including at the end of life

This micro-credential will be delivered in a blended format over 12 weeks.
You will be assessed using continuous assessment and in-person presentation with no final exam.

To help you to be successful on this course:
You must be a registered nurse or registered midwife on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
