Plan ahead

  • Preparation is the key to success
  • When you have received the assignment brief, you should take the time to plan (a) your schedule for working on your assignment (b) how you will research your assignment and your plan for accessing credible sources

Keep track of references

  • The Glucksman library offers a range of workshops to support you with preparing written assignments.
  • Depending on the size of your assignment, it might be a good idea to manage your resources using a reference management tool such as Endnote, Mendeley or Zotero

Use your own voice but don't reuse previous work

  • Do not copy and paste from a paper or other online resource. While you might plan to revist text that has been copied from another source and paraphrase, you can easily loose track of your own work and that of others leading to inadverant plagiarism.
  • It can be challenging to paraphrase when writing alongside reading a paper. Is it might be helpful to read a paper, then put it away and write your own points informed by the paper. This will help you to avoid inadvertently breaching academic integrity.
  • If you have submitted an assignment previously and feel that you have expressed an opinion well in the previous work, it can be tempting to re-use. However, this is considered to be self-plagiarism and is a breach of academic integrity.

Keep drafts and keep your work secure

  • It is a good idea to keep a separate copy of each draft of the document that you are developing.
  • This is not only good practice if Name and date them so you can keep track of your files
  • Take care with printing drafts of your assignment on shared printers or leaving an electronic version of your work unattended.

Present accurate data

  • If your assignment requires that you collect or present data that you have collated, please ensure that the data is true reflection of your data or analysis.
  • Remember that data fabrication or data falsification is considered a breach of academic misconduct

Presentations

The guidance on written assignments is also relevant to presentations. You should also remember the following when preparing presentation.

✓ Include citations for your sources throughout the presentation

✓ Include your reference list at the end of your presentation

✓ Don’t forget to include citations for images or schematics throughout your presentation

✓ Remember to collate references for the information that you deliver verbally as part of the presentation (it might be helpful to develop a script of the presentation and keep track of your references within the script)
