These explain what forms you need to complete, how to submit them, and how your vetting will be confirmed.
When to apply
When you have received an offer for a place on a programme/Co-Op placement with a vetting requirement.
- Irish-based students should apply at least 3–6 weeks before placement.
- International students or students who have lived outside Ireland should allow 6–8 weeks — especially if you need to get a Police Clearance Certificate from your home country before you leave.
Check the checklist, follow the steps, and give yourself enough time — this will help avoid delays and stress before your placement starts!
Who needs to complete vetting?
You need to go through vetting if:
- You’re on a programme that’s on the UL Vetting Requirement list, or
- You’ve been asked to be vetted for a Co-Op or an ad-hoc placement.
Step-by-step process
Step 1: Complete vetting invitation form (NVB 1)
Fill out the NVB 1 form as per the provided guidelines and print it off.
After submission, you will receive an email from the National Vetting Bureau with a link to complete a full online vetting application within 30 days.
If you are under 18
You will need to submit an NVB 3 form signed by a parent or guardian.
Step 2: Vetting validation
Bring your completed NVB1 Form to the CDV Unit with your required identity document and proof of address document.
Your documents will be validated by the CDV Unit on submission.
Submit all required documents in person during Student Vetting Pop-Up Sessions or at the CDV Unit, Room A1-084, Main Building, ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓÆµ.
We are open Monday to Friday, 11.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm.
Step 3: Online vetting application
Once your form has been submitted and processed by the CDV Unit, you will receive an email from the National Vetting Bureau (NVB) containing a link to the full online vetting application form.
You must access this link within a month or your application will expire.
Additional steps for international students/Irish Students who have lived abroad
Step 4: International police clearance certificate (PCC) (if applicable)
This is required if you have lived outside of Ireland or your home country for more than six months since the age of 16.
You must obtain a police clearance certificate from each country where you have resided (for example, an FBI clearance if you lived in the USA).
International students may submit NVB1 Forms having validated their identity online with the CDV Unit. They must then attend an in-person validation session with the CDV Unit on arrival to Ireland with the originally submitted documents.
Step 5: Sworn affidavit (international non-EU students only)
In addition to a Police Clearance Certificate, you must submit a signed , witnessed in Ireland before a or solicitor.
The typical fee for this service is approximately €10.
Key information
- Names on all documents must match NVB 1 form.
- Full disclosure of any past convictions or prosecutions is required.
- Failure to complete vetting in time can delay placements and affect registration status.
Confirmation of vetting completion
- You will receive several emails from UL and National Vetting Bureau.
- The process is NOT complete until you receive final email confirmation from UL.
- For placement confirmation, obtain a UL Vetting Confirmation Placement Agreement Form from your Course Director.
