Brief Description
Develop your knowledge and skills to implement effective psychosocial interventions to support people with complex mental health needs.
鲍尝鈥檚 two-year Master of Science in Nursing (Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health Care) provides registered nurses with the opportunity to enhance their therapeutic role in service delivery through evidence-based psychosocial interventions.
The programme, designed for working nurses, offers a blended and flexible learning approach with on-campus and workplace learning.
The programme provides opportunities for nurses to progress to specialist and advanced roles.
During this programme, you will:
- Enhance your therapeutic role in service delivery through the application of evidence-based psychosocial interventions. These include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, family intervention skills and motivational enhancement skills.
- Develop skills to support and promote a recovery model of care, empowering patients, reducing relapses and promoting community integration.
- Examine the value of multidisciplinary collaboration in the provision of quality evidenced-based Psychosocial Interventions.
- Review current innovations and developments in leading and managing change in practice.
Key information:
- Complete full-time over two years. Taken on a part-time basis
- Blended delivery 鈥 on campus and online
- Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters. You can click here for a schedule of lectures.
- Undertake six modules in Year 1, including two specialist modules in psychosocial assessment and interventions and two clinical practicum modules.
- As part of the clinical practicum modules, you will complete 500 hours of clinical practice across both semesters.
- Option to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health Care) at the end of Year 1.
- Students who achieve a minimum QCA grade of 2.00 at the end of year one may progress to the second year for the MSc award.
- Complete a systematic/integrated review at the end of the final semester.
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credentials.
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers
Year 1
Autumn Semester
- develops an understanding of the social, political, ethical and personal context of the research process.
- Theories of Psychosocial Assessment & Care (M)(NS6101) provides students with the theoretical basis for assessing the psychosocial needs of clients and an understanding of the theories underpinning psychosocial care.
- facilitates the consolidation, integration and application of theory within practice.
Spring Semester
- Promoting Quality & Safety in Health Care (M) (NS6038) explores the concept of quality and safety in healthcare in promoting quality patient outcomes.
- Psychosocial Interventions (M) (NS6092) develop and enhance knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based psychosocial interventions across a range of mental health settings.
- facilitates the consolidation, integration and application of theory within practice.
Year 2
Autumn Semester
- facilitates students to work on a systematic / integrated review.
Spring Semester
- facilitates students to organise, prepare and present final research dissertation.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor鈥檚 degree (NFQ Level 8)) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in any discipline.
- Be a registered nurse on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
- Be engaged in practice as a registered nurse for at least one year.
- Students are expected to work in a practice setting throughout the programme.
- Garda clearance is required.
