Gain the expertise to promote and maintain health and safety in the workplace with UL’s one-year, part-time online Professional Diploma in Health and Safety.
The programme equips students with the skills to prevent accidents and health problem by ensuring safety policies, practices and legislation are followed.
It covers areas such as preparing health and safety policy, behavioural based safety, accident investigation, health and safety management systems, carrying out risk assessments, working with a range of people to provide a safe working environment and keeping up to date with new legislation.
Lectures on the programme are delivered by Industry professionals sharing their expertise on day-to-day practices and future trends in the sector.
This programme will earn 30 ECTS credits towards a Flexible Masters Pathway, allowing students to combine Postgraduate awards to achieve a Master’s over time.
During this programme, you will:
- Gain the skills to create, maintain and improve health and safety in the workplace.
- Develop an understanding of the principles and application of behaviour-based safety in managing workplace health and safety.
- Explore key legislative instruments of Irish occupational health and safety legislation and their application to several industrial sectors in Ireland.
- Learn how to integrate a health and safety management system into an organisation’s existing suite of management systems.

Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters
Approx. 12 weeks per semester
Can be used to complete 30 credits towards Master of Professional Practice (MPP) or MSc Engineering Practice
- Modules with (M) beside them can be taken as independent micro-credential

- Regular feedback from faculty and peers

Year 1
Autumn Semester
- Behaviour Based Safety (M) (CH5012) develops understanding of the principles and application of behaviour-based safety in managing workplace health and safety.
- Health & Safety: Legislative Context (M) (CH5022) explore key legislative instruments of Irish occupational health and safety legislation and their application to several industrial sectors in Ireland.
Spring Semester
- Accident Investigation (M) (CH5011) reviews the principles of accident investigation and the approaches taken to investigating accidents in the workplace.
- Health & Safety Management System Integration (M) (CH5021) explores how to integrate a health and safety management system into an organisation’s existing suite of management systems.
Books and journal articles needed for the course will be available online through the UL Glucksman Library.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree ( Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant or appropriate subject.
- You should have at least 3 years of relevant industrial work experience

- Upload all documents. Your application can’t be reviewed until we have all the documents on the checklist. 
- Title the documents you are uploading. For example, "Personal Statement", "Undergraduate Transcript", "Postgraduate Transcript", "English Language Certificate" etc. 
- *If you are waiting to graduate, submit your application with the documents you have to date, you don’t need to have finished final exams before applying.
EU Fees €5,250 per annum
Please note that international study visas are only available to students studying full-time in Ireland. This programme does not qualify for a study visa. 
Annual fees are billed by semester. Once registered, students may be eligible to apply for a monthly payment plan.
