Research themes

Health and well-being in vulnerable or marginalised groups

This theme incorporates  research on how being a member of a certain group makes us vulnerable to stress and health problems (psychological, physical and social). For example, we examine caregiver stress, social and economic inequality, and the health and well-being consequences for marginalised groups.

Building health and social capital

We also conduct research on how groups can be harnessed to improve wellbeing. For example, we have researched the needs of particular populations, such as those affected by acquired brain injury, children and families who live with a disability, and those affected by unemployment. Our research shows that coupled with predisposing people to health problems, groups can also be an important part of the solution.

Social and political attitudes

This theme includes political attitudes and polarisation, intergroup attitudes and conflict, as well as trust and cooperation. For example, we have examined how people鈥檚 emotions are linked to political polarisation, and how shared attitudes inform the political attitudes of individuals within these networks. This work is important to our understanding of how people develop political attitudes.

A note on our approach to research

We are a large group, with a great number of skills and use an assortment of social science methods to answer our research questions. From conducting lab experiments to carrying out surveys, interviews, and fieldwork. We are committed to theoretically informed research that addresses everyday social issues.
