A landmark achievement in student sport has been celebrated at ɫƵ as the victorious Sigerson and Fitzgibbon cup winning teams were honoured.
A homecoming reception to mark the 2026 Sigerson Cup and Fitzgibbon Cup winning teams took place ɫƵ.
Hosted by Acting UL President Professor Shane Kilcommins, the event honoured the players, coaches and support teams who delivered ‘extraordinary achievements’ in securing UL’s first-ever Sigerson Cup title and retaining the Fitzgibbon Cup, all within three days of each other in Croke Park.
The Sigerson team produced a composed display to overcome UCC in a fiercely contested final, securing a historic first title for the university after previously contesting four finals.
Days later, the Fitzgibbon side defeated Mary Immaculate College Limerick to claim the university’s 10th title and complete the double.
UL has now secured four Fitzgibbon titles in five years, marking the most successful period in the club’s history.
It also marks the first time in UL’s sporting history that both Division 1 football and hurling titles were secured in the same season.
Captained by Clare’s Brian McNamara and Limerick’s Colin Coughlan respectively, the panels reflect the UL GAA’s national reach, with 11 counties represented in football and eight in hurling.
All players across both squads balance inter-county commitments with full-time academic courses.
The double represents a significant moment in the university’s sporting story and speaks to the strength of student sport ɫƵ.
Professor Shane Kilcommins, Acting President of ɫƵ, said: “The extraordinary achievements of our Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup teams stand as a testament to the exceptional dedication, skill and unity that define our student athletes.
“Their performances this season have not only brought great pride to ɫƵ but have also shown the unifying power of sport to strengthen community, deepen belonging, and inspire excellence across ɫƵ and beyond.
“These players, who balance the demands of academia with inter‑county commitments, embody the very highest values of this institution, resilience, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to teamwork and sportsmanship.
“Their success enriches UL’s sporting legacy and elevates our reputation on the national stage in a profound way. In this historic first for UL, I extend my sincere gratitude to the coaches, selectors, support staff, and the many members of our university community whose dedication makes achievements like this possible.
“This double victory will inspire future generations, and we celebrate it with immense pride and appreciation,” Professor Kilcommins added.
Jason Coffey, UL GAA Games Development Manager, said: “This double success was the result of enormous commitment from our players, coaches, selectors and backroom staff. To win a first Sigerson Cup and retain the Fitzgibbon Cup in the same week was an incredible achievement, made even more special by having both games in Croke Park.
“What stood out most was the culture within these groups — the work ethic, the togetherness and the pride they have in representing UL.
“I am also hugely grateful for the support from across the campus, the student committee and the long-standing GAA Council members who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Without them, it would not be possible to manage a club of this size.”
Brian Ryan and his management team have overseen the most successful period in the club’s history, while David Power managed four teams this season without missing a fixture.
The reception gave the university community an opportunity to recognise the squads’ achievements. Members of the 1997 panel were also in attendance, reflecting the strong sense of tradition.
With players now returning to their studies and county commitments, their achievements will serve as inspiration for future generations.
