Age Friendly University Orientation Day
Age Friendly University Learning Programme Participants with course organisers Joachim Fischer, Maria Hickey and Michaela Schrage-Früh
Friday, 5 September 2025

¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ proudly welcomed 32 enthusiastic older learners to campus on Friday, 5 September, for the launch of its first-ever Age Friendly University (AFU) Teaching Programme—a landmark initiative in inclusive, lifelong learning.

Designed for adults in the ‘third age’—those who are retired or seeking personal enrichment—the programme offers a unique opportunity to engage in university-level study in a flexible and supportive environment. No prior formal qualifications are required, and modules are offered at a nominal fee.

This pilot programme is the result of a collaborative effort led by UL’s Age Friendly University Committee, with generous support from Course Directors across faculties who opened their lecture halls to older learners. With coordination from Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS), Academic Registry, and IT Services, the pilot programme is now underway.

 Orientation Day Highlights:

  • Participants were welcomed by Prof. em. Joachim Fischer, Co-Chair of the AFU Committee, alongside Dr Michaela Schrage-Früh and Dr Maria Hickey (AHSS), who shared insights into the semester ahead.
  • A guided visit to the UL Library gave learners hands-on support from IT Services to help them navigate the digital tools needed for their studies.
  • The atmosphere was one of excitement, curiosity, and community—setting the tone for a transformative learning experience.

Looking Ahead: The Spring Semester module list is now available, and applications open in October 2025. Staff are encouraged to share this opportunity widely, and older adults interested in joining the programme can find full details below.
